Alleppey

Alleppey, historically known as Alappuzha, serves as the administrative nucleus of Alappuzha district in the Indian state of Kerala. It holds a distinctive historical significance as the oldest planned city in the vicinity. The lighthouse situated here is notably recognized as the foremost along the Laccadive Sea coast. In 2016, the Centre for Science and Environment bestowed upon the town the honour of being India's cleanest.
The backwaters of Alleppey emerge as a captivating draw for both domestic and international tourists. This labyrinth of backwaters, canals, lagoons, and beaches prompted George Curzon, the Viceroy of India in the early 20th century, to christen the place the "Venice of the East." It is the lowest point in the land mass of the subcontinent.

Alleppey further garners attention for being the gateway to the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a renowned competitive event held on the nearby Punnamada Lake every second Saturday of August. This race is a celebrated fixture on India's boat racing calendar. The town's prominence extends to coir manufacturing, with the Central Government establishing the Coir Board and the Central Coir Research Institute in Alleppey.
Within the confines of Alleppey, several points of interest beckon. The Alleppey beach, renowned for its ancient lighthouse, picturesque natural beauty, lush palm groves, and well-maintained gardens, stands as an emblem of the city's port history. The allure of Alleppey lies in its sprawling backwaters and tranquil lagoons where water mirrors the land. As tourists cruise through, they are treated to vignettes of village life along the shores, accompanied by the serene reflection of palm groves in the shimmering blue waters. Notably, the green expanse of Kuttanad, referred to as the "rice bowl of Kerala," with its vast stretches of emerald paddy fields, captures the heart of any beholder.
The Krishnapuram Palace, an architectural relic dating back to the 18th century and commissioned by Raja Marthanda Varma Maharaja, is preserved as an archaeological museum. This palace stands as an architectural marvel, housing a splendid collection of antique paintings, including mural paintings and sculptures.
Alleppey boasts an array of other attractions as well. The Ambalapuzha Temple, famed for its enchanting mural paintings and delectable palpayasam (sweet milk porridge), the captivating Marari Beach that transforms especially during the golden hours of morning and evening, the Portuguese-built Arthungal Church of St. Sebastian that draws throngs for its annual festival, and numerous other destinations in the vicinity captivate travellers.
